$74,162$

Mistake

$74,162^2 = 5,500,002,244$ [JRM v17 84]

Correction

The referenced page $84$ of Journal of Recreational Mathematics actually contains an article on tic-tac-toe.

The question was raised on page $59$ of JRM volume $16$ issue $1$ by Michel Criton of Cheroy, France, in the Problems and Conjectures column.

He asks for a square of the form $a_1 a_1 a_2 a_2 \dots a_n a_n$, citing $88^2 = 7744$ as an example.

He also asks whether there are infinite number of such numbers.

In JRM, volume $17$ issue $1$ on page $70$, Brian Barwell of Hapton, Middlesex, England gives the solution $74 \, 162$.

Friend H. Kierstead, Jr. states that there are no more solutions under $10^8$, conjecturing that there are only a finite number of them.
