Historical Note on Zur Theorie der Abelschen Funktionen
This paper brought Karl Weierstrass to the attention of the international mathematical community.
On the strength of it, Weierstrass, who was at the time working as a provincial schoolteacher, was offered an honorary doctor's degree.
Subsequently Weierstrass took a year's paid leave of absence to continue mathematical research.
The following year Weierstrass was offered a position at the University of Berlin, where he stayed for the rest of his life. He never returned to schoolteaching.
