Historical Note on 1881: J. Willard Gibbs: Elements of Vector Analysis
Josiah Willard Gibbs first printed his Elements of Vector Analysis in $1881$, and again in $1884$, for the benefit of his students.
Despite considerable urging, he was reluctant to publish it officially, because he felt it offered nothing original that had not already been said by others.
However, he finally consented to the pamphlet being used as the basis of a much more comprehensive work, that is, Vector Analysis, by his student Edwin Bidwell Wilson, which happened in $1901$.
