That is, it is a polyomino consisting of exactly $6$ unit squares.

Linguistic Note

The word hexomino is a back-formation from the word domino.

The prefix hex- comes from ancient Greek meaning $6$, while -omino suffix derives from the term polyomino, which is derived in turn from domino.
