Quadrature is an archaic term for the process of finding the area.
Numerical Quadrature
Numerical quadrature is the process of evaluating the approximate area of a general plane region using numerical methods, usually (and specifically) numerical integration.

The term quadrature is also used to mean the repeated application of the process of quadrature (in its original sense) so as to find the area of a plane figure.

Historical Note
The term quadrature originated as a word meaning:
- the process of constructing a square with the same area as some given geometric figure
but nowadays the term is usually confined to numerical integration.
