# Definition talk:Basis (Topology)/Analytic Basis

I think it's probably appropriate to start using $\tau$ as the symbol used for a general topology on a set. This is used by Steen and Seebach (a fairly widely-known source work) and (in my opinion) more readable than $\vartheta$ especially when primed. $\vartheta$ was introduced by someone early in ProofWiki's career who had a particular attachment to it, but whoever it was is no longer active.
Is anyone particularly attached to $\vartheta$ and have an antipathy to $\tau$? --prime mover (talk) 19:29, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
