I changed "transformation" to "operator" because it was only defined for linear transformations $V\to V$.

It is possible to define the trace of a linear transformation between distinct vector spaces of equal finite dimension, but that depends on the choice of bases so I doubt that notion is ever used (I have never). --barto (talk) 12:42, 13 July 2017 (EDT)
