- Born: 19 November 1920 in Brighton, England
- 1942: B.A. at Cambridge University
- 1942: Worked on the British effort to build a nuclear bomb
- 1944: Transferred to Los Alamos to merge with the Manhattan Project
- 1945: Returned to UK to work in Atomic Energy Research Establishment
- 1955: Took up position as Chairman of Physics at the University of South Carolina
- 1962: Took a faculty position in the MIT Physics Department
- Died: 3 February 2017 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
