- 1944: Took a leading role in the Bretton Woods Conference, at which the World Bank and International Monetary Fund were established
- 1946 Served briefly on the staff of The Economist
- 1949: Appointed economic adviser to the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation in Paris
- 1951: Became Professor of Applied Economics at Glasgow University
- 1954: First editor of the Journal of Political Economy Scottish_Journal_of_Political_EconomyScottish Journal of Political Economy
- 1961 - 64: Economic adviser to the UK government
- 1964 - 69: Head of the Government Economic Service
- 1969 - 78: Master of St Peter's College, Oxford
- 1970: Delivered the MacMillan Memorial Lecture to the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland
- 1972 - 96: Chancellor of the University of Glasgow
- Died: 21 October 1998
