  • 1901: One semester at University of Lausanne
  • 1902: University of Berlin
  • 1906: Received qualification to teach at University of Berlin
  • 1907: Doctorate from University of Berlin
  • 1908: Travelled to Japan to teach in Nagasaki
  • 1909: Travelled in India and China
  • 1910: Returned to Germany, married the painter Gertrud Kressner
  • 1910: Moved to Tsingtao, eastern Shantung province, China
  • 1910 -- 1911: Taught at the German-Chinese academy in Tsingtao
  • 1911: Returned to Germany, taught at Military Technical Academy and Military Academy
  • 1914: Wounded in action in World War I, returned to teaching at Berlin University
  • 1915: Appointed as extraordinary professor at Königsberg
  • 1919: Became ordinary professor at Königsberg
  • 1926: Appointed to chair of mathematics at Tübingen University
  • 1950: Retired
  • Died: 20 April 1957 in Annecy, France
