• 1974: Gained a masters degree from Duke University
• 1978: Earned a doctorate in mathematics education from North Carolina State University
• 1978-83: Faculty position at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte
• 1983: Returned to North Carolina State University
• 1995: Fulbright scholar in Ghana
• 2000 to 2002: President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
• 2009: NCSU College Distinguished Award recipient
• 2010: Distinguished Alumni Award from the NCSU College of Education
