Historical Note on $\cdot$ Symbol for Multiplication

The symbol $\cdot$ was the preferred notation of Leibniz, who criticised William Oughtred's invention of $\times$ for being too similar to the letter $x$.

Leibniz's preference $\cdot$ is now widespread.
