Definition
Matter is the stuff of which the physical universe is composed.
At a certain level, can be considered as a form of energy.
Matter is (to a first degree of approximation) composed of atoms.

Linguistic Note
The adjectival form of matter is material.
However, material is often used in a noun form to mean matter or substance, particularly when it is used to mean cloth.
