Let $\mathsf C_1, \mathsf C_2, \cdots, \mathsf C_n$ be class intervals of data.

Let $N_1, N_2, \ldots, N_n$ denote the frequency of each of $\mathsf C_1, \mathsf C_2, \cdots, \mathsf C_n$ respectively.

The modal class is the class interval $\mathsf C_j$ for which $N_j$ is the greatest.

The modal class is not necessarily unique for a given set of data.
