Most of our knowledge of the mathematics of ancient Egypt has come to us through a number of documents written on papyrus.
Linguistic Note
The word papyrus is word of Latin root for an early form of paper made from reeds.
As with the word paper, it can not only mean the substance, but also individual documents written on it.
In the latter context, its plural is papyri.
