Definition:Year/Calendar
Definition
A calendar year is the number of days between dates with the same designation in adjacent years.
As a year is not an integral number of days, it is necessarily an approximation to the actual year.
\(\ds \) | \(\) | \(\ds 1\) | calendar year
\(\ds \) | \(=\) | \(\ds 12\) | months usually, depending on the calendar used
\(\ds \) | \(=\) | \(\ds 365 \text{ or } 366\) | days, usually, but it depends on the calendar used |
Calendar
A calendar is a technique to keep track of the passing of time throughout the course of a year.
Its objective is to provide a more-or-less standard way of identifying the time of year by associating a name and number to each day in the year.
Also known as
The calendar year is often referred to as the civil year, and the two are often coincident.
Some societies, however, for historic or religious reasons, adopt a calendar year which is different from the conventional civil year in the milieu.
Hence civil year and calendar year are not universally synonymous.
