While still a pupil at school, he had access to a copy of a fascinating book in the school library that had in it a short catalogue of cubic and quartic curves.

One of these curves was this one.

He would give his eye teeth to find out what book it was he found it in.

He has happy memories of spending many a fine sunny afternoon while grounded for some piffling infraction, such as wearing the wrong coloured socks, or mashing the face of an adversary to an unrecognisable bloody pulp, plotting these curves on graph paper.
