Cybernetics is the branch of science which studies the man-machine interface.
In a wider sense, it is the science of communication and control, as applied to machines, animals and organizations.

Historical Note
The science of cybernetics was developed by Norbert Wiener in $1946$.
Linguistic Note
The word cybernetics was coined by Norbert Wiener from the Greek word κυβερνήτης (kubernḗtēs), which means pilot or steersman.
The same root word is also the origin (via the Latin corruption gubernator) of the English word governor.
