## Definition

An **expression** is a well-formed word of mathematical symbols which together can be considered as a single object.

### Algebraic Expression

An **algebraic expression** is a formula obtained by combining symbols together with the arithmetic operations $+$, $-$, $\times$, $\div$, and possibly powers and roots.
