Fractional calculus is the branch of calculus which considers the concept of derivatives of fractional order.

Historical Note
The field of fractional calculus was initiated by Joseph Liouville when he assigned meaning to the concept of the derivative $\dfrac {\d^n} {\d x^n}$ for $n$ not a positive integer.
