Definition
A Gantt chart is a diagram for scheduling problems in operations research where, for example, separate axes for time are allocated to each of $2$ machines.
Blocks are placed on the time axes, which indicate the time periods when each machine is performing particular jobs.
A Gantt chart is useful to indicate when machines need to be idle in the case where operations needing more than one machine must be performed in sequence, and later operations which require one machine cannot be started until earlier operations using the other machine are complete, and perhaps also after further additional time delays are needed (for example, for paint to dry or adhesives to set).
