## Definition

Consider a cycloid formed from the locus of a point $P$ on the circumference of a circle rolling without slipping along a straight line.

The circle which rolls along the straight line is called the **generating circle** of the cycloid.

## Also known as

A **generating circle** can also be referred to as just the **generator**.
