The $4$ intercardinal directions are the directions on (or near) Earth's surface halfway between the cardinal directions:
Northeast
Northeast is the direction on (or near) Earth's surface halfway between north and east.
Northwest
Northwest is the direction on (or near) Earth's surface halfway between north and west.
Southeast
Southeast is the direction on (or near) Earth's surface halfway between south and east.
Southwest
Southwest is the direction on (or near) Earth's surface halfway between south and west.

The intercardinal directions are also known as the intercardinal points.
This misnomer arises from the concept of the point of the needle of a compass.
