Definition
Let $S$ be a surface of revolution.
A meridian section of $S$ is a plane section of $S$ that contains the axis of revolution of $S$.
Examples
Paraboloid
Let $\SS$ be a paraboloid of revolution.
Let $\PP$ be a meridian section of $\SS$.
Then $\PP$ is a parabola.
