A soliton is a water wave whose form can be described by a solution to the Korteweg-de Vries equation.

Historical Note
Solitons were first observed by John Scott Russell in $1834$.
They exhibit remarkable properties of stability.
Their existence was mathematically justified by the work of Diederik Johannes Korteweg and Gustav de Vries in $1895$
