Presumably it's called the $n$th term test because it investigates the behavior of the $n$th term of the sequence as $n \to +\infty$, but that's rather uninformative. Google and wolfram mathworld say the name is more than just the whims of my personal imagination, though. --GFauxPas 12:10, 19 February 2012 (EST)
