Is there a way to fix the vertical align in

\(\ds x\) \(=\) \(\ds \sum_n\)

or worse,

\(\ds x\) \(=\) \(\ds \sum_{\substack {n\\ m} }\)

without adding phantom text at the top of the summation? --barto (talk) (contribs) 14:15, 15 November 2017 (EST)

Sadly, not without breaking horizontal alignment of the $=$ signs. Which is a too high price to pay. Placing the construct outside of eqn may reduce the frequency of the pain. — Lord_Farin (talk) 14:29, 15 November 2017 (EST)
