A $d$-dimensional chart of $M$ is an ordered pair $\struct {U, \phi}$, where:

$U$ is an open subset of $M$

$\phi: U \to D$ is a homeomorphism of $U$ onto an open subset $D$ of Euclidean space $\R^d$.
