Definition
Let $P$ be a real-world phenomenon whose underlying theory is not understood.
Then in order to construct a mathematical model, it is necessary to monitor and record the output while measuring the input conditions.
Hence the model is built up from observation and imitation.
Such a model is referred to as an empirical model.
