Two real numbers are defined as being equal if and only if they correspond to the same point on the real number line.

The numbers $\dfrac 1 2$ and $\dfrac 2 4$ are equal, as they both correspond with the point which is the midpoint of the line segment from $0$ to $1$ on the real number line.
