Definition
Let $f$ be a real-valued or complex-valued function
A functional equation for $f$ is an equation of the form $\map f {x, y, \ldots} = 0$, where the expression for $f$ may contain
- a finite number of independent variables
- a finite number of either known or unknown functions
for which $f$ is to be solved.
