It is equal to the conductance of an electrical conductor that has a resistance of $1$ ohm.

Also known as
A Siemens was originally called the mho (that is: ohm backwards), and had the symbol $\mho$.
Some practitioners prefer $\mho$ to the standard siemens symbol $\mathrm S$ as it is immediately distinguishable.
