Definition:Statfarad
Definition
The statfarad is the CGS unrationalised electrostatic unit of capacitance.
It is defined as being the amount of capacitance of a capacitor between the plates of which an electric potential of $1$ statvolt appears when it stores $1$ statcoulomb of electric charge.
Symbol
- $\mathrm {statF}$
The symbol for the statfarad is $\mathrm {statF}$.
Its $\LaTeX$ code is \mathrm {statF}
.
Also known as
The statfarad is also known as the electrostatic unit of capacitance, abbreviated $\mathrm {e.s.u.}$.
In older texts, the unit may be rendered as the centimetre, reflecting its dimension in the CGS-ESU (electrostatic cgs) absolute system of units .
Source of Name
This entry was named for Michael Faraday.
Linguistic Note
The word statfarad is a shortened form of abstatfarad, where the idea was that the prefix abstat should stand for absolute electrostatic and mean belonging to the CGS-ESU (electrostatic cgs) absolute system of units.
