I've come across the convention that $f^{(0)} := f$. Is this a common notation? If so, should I make a subpage for zeroth derivative, or just add it as a note? --GFauxPas (talk) 15:01, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

You might want to add negative numbers as well, extrapolating in the obvious direction, in which case a separate section. This area needs a good refactoring, it seems, as it's a bit unstructured - feel free to add a refactor tag at the top.
I've never seen it, but it seems a natural notation; it could especially make the definition of derivation by multi-indices cq. finite sequences easier by allowing for the zero cq. empty sequence. --Lord_Farin (talk) 21:41, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
I have actually seen it - I believe it's one of those things that physicists use when proving the existence of the universe - it's the sort of unfussy and compact shorthand which tends to make notation purists wince but gets the job done. --prime mover (talk) 22:13, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
