The drop in EMF $E_C$ caused by a capacitor is proportional to the electric charge $Q$ that has accumulated on the capacitor:
- $E_C = \dfrac 1 C Q$
The reciprocal of the constant of proportion $\dfrac 1 C$ is known as the capacitance of the capacitor.
