Symbols used in Group Theory

Order of Group Element

$\order x$

The order of $x$ (in $G$), denoted $\order x$, is the smallest $k \in \Z_{> 0}$ such that $x^k = e_G$.

The $\LaTeX$ code for \(\order x\) is \order x .

Group Action

$\wedge$

$g \wedge x$ is sometimes used for the image of $x$ under the action of $g$, but this usage is non-standard.

The $\LaTeX$ code for \(\wedge\) is \wedge .

The same symbol can be produced using \land, but this is usually used when the symbol is used in the sense of the logical and context.
