Definition
In elementary mathematics, BODMAS is a way to remember the order in which operations should be done to evaluate an expression.
The letters stand for:
- B - Brackets
- O - Other (such as Indices)
- D - Division
- M - Multiplication
- A - Addition
- S - Subtraction
Examples
Example 1: $\sqrt{4 + 6 \times \left({12 - 2}\right)}$
\(\ds \sqrt{4 + 6 \times \left({12 - 2}\right)}\) | \(=\) | \(\ds \sqrt{4 + 6 \times 10}\) | Brackets, then the expression under $\sqrt{ }$ to do Indices next
\(\ds \) | \(=\) | \(\ds \sqrt{4 + 60}\) | Multiplication
\(\ds \) | \(=\) | \(\ds \sqrt{64}\) | Addition
\(\ds \) | \(=\) | \(\ds 8\) | and finally Indices can be done |
