Definition

In elementary mathematics, BODMAS is a way to remember the order in which operations should be done to evaluate an expression.

The letters stand for:

  • B - Brackets
  • O - Other (such as Indices)
  • D - Division
  • M - Multiplication
  • A - Addition
  • S - Subtraction

Examples

Example 1: $\sqrt{4 + 6 \times \left({12 - 2}\right)}$

\(\ds \sqrt{4 + 6 \times \left({12 - 2}\right)}\) \(=\) \(\ds \sqrt{4 + 6 \times 10}\) Brackets, then the expression under $\sqrt{ }$ to do Indices next
\(\ds \) \(=\) \(\ds \sqrt{4 + 60}\) Multiplication
\(\ds \) \(=\) \(\ds \sqrt{64}\) Addition
\(\ds \) \(=\) \(\ds 8\) and finally Indices can be done
