Definition

The major axis of a central conic $\KK$ is the straight line passing through both foci of $\KK$.

This may or may not be defined as being terminated at the vertices of $K$ according to variations of definitions.

The distinction should be clear according to usage.

Major Axis of Ellipse

The major axis of $K$ is the line segment passing through both $F_1$ and $F_2$ whose endpoints are where it intersects $K$.

Major Axis of Hyperbola

Consider a hyperbola $K$ whose foci are $F_1$ and $F_2$.

The major axis of $K$ is the straight line passing through both of the foci of $K$.
