Definition
A volume element $\delta V$ is a (usually) infinitesimal volume of space (usually) containing a particular point $P$.
In the cartesian $3$-space such a volume element is modelled as a cuboid whose edges are parallel to the coordinate axes and assigned lengths $\delta x$, $\delta y$ and $\delta z$ respectively:
