Definition talk:Identity Arithmetic Function

I agree regarding the name, but couldn't think of a better convention. I did entertain calling what is now unit arithmetic function the monic arithmetic function, and this the unity (/unit/unitary/unital) arithmetic function. What's down is according to Apostol - Intro to Analytic No. Theory --Linus44 03:32, 2 May 2011 (CDT)

No worries - if Apostol uses this nomenclature (hang on, I have that one myself! It's on one of my tottering piles of maths-books-I-haven't-got-round-to-looking-at-properly-yet. Can't find it at the moment) then that's good enough provenance. My motivation was putting these functions into the context of the existing structure of ProofWiki.
This is another area where I haven't explored much, so apart from walking along behind with the proverbial bucket and shovel, I'm not going to be able to contribute much at the moment (besides, I'm getting down and dirty in point set topology which is a colossal pile of rich fertiliser in itself). --prime mover 03:48, 2 May 2011 (CDT)

As to the "note on name", "identity" is meant in the sense of Definition:Identity Element (for Dirichlet convolution) rather than identity function. Still a bit of an oddity. Caliburn (talk) 11:31, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
