I have as reference the following lecture notes: http://www.math.ethz.ch/~einsiedl/FA-lecture.pdf

How should I put the reference in "sources"? - Giallo

We are ambivalent towards linking to PDFs on the web as sources due to the transient and ephemeral nature of such material. It's preferable to find the source in a published work if you can find one. --prime mover (talk) 15:29, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
And funnily enough, this link is dead as of writing! Caliburn (talk) 20:17, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

I have added an explanation about the norms used. - Giallo

Philosophy

The philosophy of this site is that everything should be explainable in terms of something else. Any page with notation on it which is outside the realms of primary-school understanding (i.e. anything above $+, -, \times$ etc. in standard algebraic expressions) is to be explained with a link to the page in which it is defined.

Some contributors to this site do not agree with this philosophy, thinking: "If you're looking at a page on advanced algebraic number theory / whatever, then you will already know what the terminology means, so there is no need to provide a definition." To which the response is: "That is not the philosophy of this website." --prime mover (talk) 16:25, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

That response is - among other, more philosophical reasons - motivated by the fact that if we didn't, there were no way to ensure consistency of terminology across the site, and of this site with respect to other sources. --Lord_Farin (talk) 23:04, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
