I don't think it's quite right to say that "this approach doesn't work". It's very possible that there's no nice way to evaluate the integral, but that's hard to know for sure. When I asked on MSE years ago they basically thought the form wasn't very useful and transformed it to something else, basically reverting a lot of manipulation thus far. I think presenting the proof like this discourages people from trying this sort of approach. Edit: I should elaborate that I didn't put in the bit about the Taylor expansion, that does indeed make the proof go full circle but originally I stopped at the artanh integral.
